Rev. Young is a graduate of Harding High School 1948, Duke University 1951, Duke Divinity School 1954; Honorary DD Degree Pfeiffer University 1976. He was a United Methodist minister in several Western North Carolina cities and towns; Randleman, Hayesville, Kernersville, Statesville, Thomasville, and Winston-Salem. He was the United Methodist Superintendent of Ablemarle and Winston Salem Districts. He was named by Candler School of Theology and Progressive Farmer Magazine as NC Rural Minister of the Year in 1961. Granted the Duke Divinity School Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988. He served as Vice-President of the Church’s Board of Global Ministries for 8 years, and retired after 12 years as Vice-President of the Publishing Division of the United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, TN. He has had extensive travel on behalf of the Church in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In various places he was a Rotarian, Lion, and Exchange Club member. He is the chairperson of the Library Advisory Committee at Galloway Ridge and sings with the Galloway Ridge Choral Singers, a group founded and led by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jean. Together they are the parents of two children and grandparents of two.
